Arthur Duffy is known within HMFH as a vast resource for the entire office. Team members, contractors, and clients appreciate his encyclopedic technical knowledge, and he is valued for his role as a philosopher-teacher and mentor of architectonic practice. Arthur joined HMFH while still in architectural school, and over the succeeding two decades, his values and best practices have become intertwined with HMFH’s practice standards: He has played a key role in developing office-wide standards for construction documents, as well as ensuring that each HMFH project adheres to these standards. His resourcefulness and attention to detail are evident in his work on the Sprague School in Wellesley, MA. Although an earlier study deemed the existing 1920’s schoolhouse too troublesome to renovate for current programming needs, Arthur and the team diligently explored alternatives and developed a solution that preserves the beloved building without any programmatic sacrifices. As a result, the client did not have to make a decision between preserving history and serving today’s students: with multiple small additions, the design quadruples the building’s footprint while preserving the “small schoolhouse” charm of the original.
