As Design Director, Mario Torroella’s impact has been to assure a creative spirit that infuses the firm’s recognized attention to detail, focusing on how a building should work. By establishing clarity of purpose for a given space, Mario deftly guides a project team through the sensitive development of buildings that, in their human scale and appropriateness of use, create a strong sense of place with clear navigation. Bright colors, shifting daylight, and unexpected window connections help to create an element of surprise, imbuing a building with life, humor, and interest. Under Mario’s design direction, HMFH projects have been honored for excellence in school design, historic preservation, adaptive reuse, housing, including six Walter Taylor Awards and three K-12 Educational Facilities Awards from the Boston Society of Architects. An accomplished artist, his paintings and tapestries have been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad, and he has had one-man art shows in San Juan, Puerto Rico; Nantes, France; and Boston, MA. His work also hangs in the The Museum of Contemporary Art of Vélez-Málaga, Spain and can be viewed at www.torroellaart.com.
