Steve Friedlaender’s integration of architecture with educational planning reflects his belief that excellence in architecture requires more than simply good design, but also good communication. He has directed the firm’s educational planning and programming process on many significant projects, translating the client’s space needs and program goals into a workable and buildable plan that results in a harmonious whole. Under Steve’s leadership, the groundbreaking Brewster Elementary School, winner of HMFH’s first Walter Taylor Award in 1976, succeeded both from an educational and design perspective. Classroom clusters accommodate teaching teams, and the design maintains its Cape Cod character while engaging its young users with colorful surprises and child-scaled elements. In his current role outside of HMFH as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the New England Conservatory, as well as Chair of the Campus Facilities Committee, Steve furthers his commitment to improving the dialogue between architects, owners, and users.
