This project was designed to solidify UMASS Lowell’s presence downtown, as the university works to centralize its Lowell campus. HMFH worked with the client to transform the five-story, former McQuade Mills building into a new home for its Graduate School of Education and its on-site laboratory school. The upper floors will contain classrooms, administrative offices, TV studios, teaching and computer labs, and student lounges and gathering spaces. The lower two floors will be designed for an elementary school run in conjunction with the City of Lowell. Both the building and site design require careful integration of shared uses, including a central lobby serving five-year-olds, as well as graduate students.
