This much needed Athletic Center defines the western edge of campus and serves the increasing athletic, fitness, and team needs of the school’s 400 students. With the recently-completed Arts Center, it bookends the 1920s-era main building and mitigates the discordance of earlier additions. A new entry plaza links old and new and is a vibrant new gathering spot for students, teams and visitors.
From the plaza, the skylit gallery runs through the building, opening into the competition-size gym and leading out to the upper playing fields beyond. The brightly daylit gymnasium accommodates varsity athletic competition and school-wide events with bleacher seating for 650 spectators. The locker wing includes separate upper and middle school facilities, plus training, fitness and office spaces. Continuing the emphasis on natural lighting, the locker rooms and fitness center are flooded with daylight from carefully located skylights and windows.
Attention to detail, from acoustic treatments in the main gym and polished concrete floor of the gallery, to brightly painted walls in locker rooms, offices, and fitness center, provides both high performance and elegance in this heavily-used building.
