HMFH designed the renovation of the former Lowell
Trade School located in the city's downtown historic district to
house two unique K-8 magnet schools--the Arts School and the City
School. The Arts School curriculum is built around dance, painting,
sculpture and drama. The City School is organized as a micro-society
with its own banking and currency system, newspapers, markets and
government.
Each magnet school has its own classrooms and library. The Arts
School has a small theater and studios for dance, television, painting,
sculpture, and graphic art. The City School has courtrooms, a bank,
and a store. Shared spaces include special education rooms and a
gymnasium/cafeteria.
The renovation included installation of a new
elevator, upgrade of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
as well as significant alterations to all interior spaces.
