This 1950s elementary school was renovated
and expanded to accommodate Wellesley's growing elementary age population. Because
the building occupies a small, constricted site in a residential neighborhood,
the additional space was gained by constructing three small additions rather than
a single large one. Additions include a third kindergarten classroom, three new
standard classrooms, a new cafeteria, a new music room and a small extension of
the existing gym to accommodate a performance platform so that the gym can function
as a more flexible multi-purpose space. Beyond the
additions, the Bates School underwent a total renovation that involved all classrooms,
provided new lockers (much to the delight of students, new tile, lighting, and
ceilings, and included complete replacement of mechanical and electrical systems.
The work involved a complex phasing plan that was executed so successfully, the
project was completed six months ahead of schedule. Because
of their size, the three additions are scaled like houses and are detailed with
pitched roofs and shingles to more carefully reflect the neighborhood context.
In addition, the site was redesigned for more efficient use with increased on-site
parking, improved drop-off/pick-up circulation patterns, a special lane to pull
unwanted bus traffic off the street, and new playgrounds.
