In September, 1996, 2200 1st through
5th graders entered a brand new elementary school complex designed by HMFH Architects.
Located on a 10-acre site at Merritt Park, the 253,000-square foot school is divided
into four individual "schoolhouses" for 550 students each. Though
part of a single building complex, the schoolhouses operate as independent entities
with their own public entrances and school administration facilities. Each pair
of schoolhouses shares a cafeteria, library, gymnasium and health suite. Geometric
shapes and bright colors distinguish each "schoolhouse" from the others,
humanizing the scale of the building for its young users. Preservation
and improvement of public recreation amenities at Merritt Park were an important
part of the site program. The open space was divided into a grass playing field
and paved playground where interpretive play structures develop waterfront themes
connecting the children and the community with the city's history of waterway
activity. Schematic Design and Design Development for the
Elementary Schools were completed on an accelerated 12-week schedule, and construction
documents on an accelerated 18-week schedule.
