After completing a study of all the
town's school facilities, HMFH was asked by the Town of Wakefield to design renovations
and additions to the Dolbeare Elementary School. With a plan to abandon the town's
oldest, most inefficient schools, the newer elementary schools required expansion
and renovation to accommodate current educational needs. The
PreK-4 Dolbeare School is triple its original size. The program called for renovation
of 22,000 square feet of existing space, as well as a 48,000 sf addition, resulting
in 16 standard classrooms, plus specialized rooms for art, music, science, and
a computer lab. The existing multi-purpose room was converted into the art classroom,
taking advantage of the double-height space. A new cafetorium with stage and a
new gymnasium, separated from each other by operable partitions, were included
in the addition.
