Originally planned as an addition to an existing
school that would have doubled its size, this new building is situated
on 18 acres of land with sensitive wetland areas abutting the site
of the original school.
The new project follows in the tradition of the
other school in its aesthetics, scaled to the regional heritage,
its immediate surrounding, and its young occupants. The first phase
is for 450 students with core facilities for an ultimate capacity
of 600. The single-story design strives for simplicity, using a
T-shape plan. The cross of "T" is a double-loaded classroom
wing with all standard classrooms facing south, east or west--honoring
a specific request that no classrooms face north.
The infrastructure includes a technology network
for the elementary school level with a fully-integrated telephone/telecommunications
system. The building is designed for community use featuring a large
cafeteria space with a raised platform, a full-sized gymnasium accessible
by a separate community entrance, and developed play fields.
