Designing four identical K-5 schools on very small
and very different sites presented an enormous challenge. The solution,
a compact three-story plan with light-filled atriums linking each
of the levels, provides many visual and physical connections between
inside and ouside. The kindergartens open directly out to play areas.
The administrative offices and all shared spaces are easily accessible
both during school and after hours for community use.
Natural light and bright patterns enrich the interiors
where students and teachers can take advantage of an advanced integrated
technology network with computer connections at every desk. The
gym and cafeteria are separated by a folding partition which, when
opened, creates a major interior multipurpose space with a stage
at one end. The room is available for community-wide activities.
The schools were built in phases. The first two
schools built were called Golden Hill and Silver Hill; and the second
pair, Bradford and Pentucket Lake, was completed five years later.
