The 1920s Sprague School, closed for 30 years,
was restored and expanded to accommodate Wellesley's growing elementary
school population. The overall project design is sensitive to the
surrounding residential neighborhood. Roof lines and massing in
the addition are scaled to match the original building, and the
open space at the front of the 1920s building was redesigned to
be pedestrian-friendly. A parking lot and driveway were replaced
with a playground for neighborhood use. Pedestrian paths and a refurbished
entrance to the old school serve neighborhood children who walk
to school.
At the heart of the restored original building, HMFH has designed
a library that opens up former attic space, exposing the original
roof trusses above the vaulted ceiling. In a reference to the exterior
clock tower directly above the circulation desk, HMFH has designed
an interior clock that fills the base of the tower. The cozy library
features a sunny bay window with a bench where students can curl
up with a favorite book. A new cafeteria, music, and special education
rooms also occupy the original building.
