This project involved a substantial
addition to this small elementary school on Cape Cod. New construction included
six classrooms, a new cafeteria, kitchen and gymnasium. A portion of the original
wooden schoolhouse, built in 1937, was saved and incorporated in the new building.
Porches, trellises, gabled roofs, cupolas and carefully detailed woodwork reflect
the surrounding architectural tradition, but they also provide a residential scale,
which is familiar and welcoming to its youngest users. A ramp serves as a major
unifying element connecting classrooms on the upper level with the lower, entry-level
community and shared facilities. The ramp's landing/turning point creates a turret
on the exterior of the building, marking the front entry. Renovations
and additions respond to the significant changes in special education, computer
technology, and instructional media, and incorporate community recreational and
meeting spaces. The new facilities include four regular classrooms; kindergarten,
preschool, and special education classrooms; art and music rooms; facilities for
school administration, a new gym/town meeting hall; a cafeteria; and a community
room. Two existing classrooms were refurbished, and the new library/media center
and computer lab occupy the renovated, original gym. The
scope of work included a study of the feasibility of additions to the existing
buildings versus construction of a new school on a new site.
