Following the success of HMFH's Elementary
and Middle Schools in Chelsea, the city called on HMFH to improve its relatively
new high school. When it was originally completed
in 1996, the building was designed for 1000 students in grades 9-12 and was organized
around a house system. With a surge in the 9-12 population and abandonment of
the house system in favor of a departmental organization of the school, the client
needed a larger, more flexible facility. HMFH's design
includes a four-story addition, as well as renovation and repartitioning in the
existing building to make the former house layout more responsive to the high
school's program needs. The 85,000 sf addition, which increases the school to
240,000 sf and will accommodate a total population of 1,500 students, includes
general classrooms, four new science laboratories, a multi-purpose room, and a
relocated Main Office.
