This new Junior-Senior High School
houses 650 students in grades 7-12. The carefully articulated masonry and granite
facade presents a restrained and dignified exterior. Only the hint of bright red
on the steel frame for the granite marquee prepares the visitor for the lively
colors encountered once inside the building. The
110,000 sf facility is designed to integrate community uses into the school setting,
and a skylit arcade forms the "street" along which all of the school
and community spaces are organized. Portions of the building can be closed, allowing
selective access to desired facilities for after-school community use such as
the gymnasium, the library or the 450 seat auditorium. In
addition to core spaces, the first floor contains laboratories and studios for
art, technology, and domestic arts, as well as a music suite adjacent to the auditorium.
On the second floor, classrooms surround a core of science and computer facilities. In
addition to the fully networked computer system, innovative technologies abound
in the building. Room sensors turn off lights in empty classrooms and turn them
on again when the room is occupied. An ice storage system allows the facility
to make use of off-peak electric rates to air condition interior portions of the
school. The school's 360 KW emergency generator will actually generate enough
excess capacity to sell power back to the utility company during peak demand times
as well.
