When HMFH was hired by the four towns of this
rural regional school district to renovate and add on to their middle
school, the building consisted of a symmetrical neoclassical 1937
central wing and two nondescript 1957 additions.
In order to accommodate the school's growth from 600 to 900 students
and to facilitate its "team teaching" concept, the facility
was rearranged internally and expanded extensively. A 600-seat auditorium
and a new gymnasium were added as well as classrooms, science labs,
shops, art studios, computer labs, and music facilities.
Taking cues from the original building, HMFH designed the additions
to harmonize with the neoclassical style while creating a contemporary
and unified campus for the students. The carefully detailed facade
with its historic references in fact encloses a contemporary facility.
The school is equipped with a technology infrastructure capable
of supporting integrated voice, video, and data networks in every
classroom and teaching station.
