HMFH and Studio G Designing New Home For Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology

Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology (BFIT) is moving to Dudley Square, with two WBE certified architecture firms, HMFH Architects and Studio G Architects, collaborating to design their new home. The design team will be led by HMFH principal Pip Lewis and Studio G managing principal Gail Sullivan, both residents of Jamaica Plain and fierce advocates for local communities in Boston.

Founded in 1908 and funded by a bequest from Benjamin Franklin, today’s student body is 73% students of color; 54% are first generation college students. BFIT uses a “hi-tech, high-touch” approach that combines technology and general education coursework with counseling and a breadth of student support. This approach provides a personalized learning environment for its racially, ethnically, and economically diverse student body.  BFIT boasts an 85% full-time job placement rate.

We are excited to be creating a building design for Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology's unique program of academics and hands-on learning.

Gail Sullivan said, “This new school building, focused on serving Boston’s young adults, is an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the Roxbury Innovation District and the vibrancy of this side of Dudley Square.”

BFIT’s new campus will be located at the former Harrison Supply site, close to the heart of Dudley Square, and next to the historic Eliot Burying Ground and Torrent Six Fire Station.

The new 85,000 SF first phase is customized to BFIT’s academic programs, and will include state-of-the-art workforce training labs, such as an advanced manufacturing center, electronics lab, walk-in optical shop, and automotive garage.
